TECH NEWS WHY IS PROMO HUTT SO GOOD? Promo Hutt Online PR words: MICK WILSON Why did you decide to start Promo Hutt? Chris: “The company was borne out of a unique understanding of both the needs of record labels and DJs. We set out to provide DJs [with] the same level of access as international artists and bridge the gap in the relationship between labels and Chris Gorsuch the people who buy their music.” Who do you envisage using your services? Chris: “DJs and record labels from the electronic music community will be the core of our user base, initially, at least. We’re dedicated to developing a service that suits the needs of Phil Asher our users... it’s a fluid thing.” Phil: “DJs of course, radio stations, sync clients, discerning music fans. It’s a new approach and caters to the casual DJ. From our point of view, Restless Soul as a label want to get our music to an even bigger audience. The more people that have our music, the greater the chance of it getting played. That’s important.” What can Promo Hutt bring to the table that other services can’t? Chris: “The obvious attraction for subscribers is music in advance of its official release. We’re also enabling better connections between record labels and their core subscribers. It’s also free for labels to use!” ACE IN THE PROMO PACK Get ahead of the pack with Promo Hutt’s new digital online promo service... T he internet is changing the way that labels, DJs and producers go about their day-today business. It’s become a valuable tool. One such digital innovation that is designed to make life easier for the uber busy jock and make sure that record labels target their music to the right people is Promo Hutt. This sleek online service is designed to take away some of the strain for anyone who needs to get their music heard and played. Once, record label promo lists were the domain of high-profile superstar DJs. Often those on the next tier down were missing out on getting their hands on upfront tracks and, dare we say it, some of these promo lists were as out-dated as the ark. Labels wouldn’t benefit, as often the promos would be sent to DJs who had long since past their sell-by date or to DJs who weren’t even gigging. Promo Hutt differs by engaging DJs from all walks of life, giving them the opportunity to subscribe to the labels and genres that suit them best. 086 djmag.com Promo Hutt is an online monthly music subscription service which has been integrated within another online music service, Soundcloud. DJs and labels who use Soundcloud can now link directly through this portal to the Promo Hutt website by clicking on the ‘Get this Promo Now’ tab to sign up to the labels they love and receive upfront releases before the music arrives in the shops. It also gives Soundcloud subscribers the option to receive the recordings they like and click through to Promo Hutt to obtain all the benefits of receiving prereleased music, just like those industry professionals. Just one of the reasons why services like Promo Hutt are vying to be the music lover and DJ’s best friend. DJ Mag spoke with Chris Gorsuch from Promo Hutt and DJ/label owner Phil Asher from Restless Soul to get the label’s perspective as to why this kind of venture is the future of music promotion… “Get unreleased music at the same time as professional DJs” — Doesn’t this defeat the object of promotional use by allowing the everyday man on the street access to music that would previously have been for the select few? Chris: “Traditionally, in electronic music at least, there’s always been an avenue for the ‘everyday person’ to get pre-release music. From buying white labels from under the record store counter, CD pools to club sales. We’re bringing a fresh digital angle to this idea to fill the demand for exclusive and upfront music. Allowing music lovers a choice of legitimate channels to choose from should be viewed as a positive step. Promo Hutt helps DJs to progress and gain exposure and gives record labels feedback from a group that is not traditionally easy for labels to connect with in a meaningful way.” Phil: “Certain DJs will always receive promotional music for free, it’s integral to the job. With technology the rise of the DJ is insane — this service helps the beginners feel like professionals and gives an edge over those not using the service. Remember it’s what you play that counts. Music will always have a degree of exclusivity, the privy few who get tracks straight from a producer or label, months before any scheduling has even been planned. So there’s always going to be special tracks that only a certain few have.” promohutt.com djmag.com 087
