INTERVIEW

This month I chatted to Rupert Lally about his latest release Fictions. Grab a copy HERE.

Hi Rupert and thanks for taking the time to chat about your release ‘Fictions’. The opening track ‘Welcome To The Company’ feels somehow bleak and restricted with well blended arpeggio and melodic layers. What synths / modules are making up those sounds? And how were they processed to sound like a coherent family of sounds?

Funnily enough, it’s mostly the Roland System 1: both it’s own internal synth, doing the slightly pitch bend drone and then the ProMars plugout for the arpeggios. The one exception is the little gong or bell-like sound that opens the track, that was done with the modular using Peaks in envelope mode to trigger Braids going into some reverb. I used the buttons on Peaks to trigger it manually, create a 4 bar loop and then go back and make sure the timing was really spot on using Ableton’s sample editor. A lot of the percussion sounds on the album were created this way.
