MEGAN MASTERSON: SCHOLARSHIP WINNER SPOTLIGHT This year a second high school student, Megan Masterson will be awarded the Andrew Scott Johnson Memorial Scholarship Foundation Distinguished Recipient Award of $7500. A varsity volleyball player for the past four years, Megan recently graduated from William T. Dwyer High School in Jupiter, Florida, with a cumulative GPA of 3.667 and enrolled in the Florida State University (Go ‘Noles!) this summer to jump-start her academic college career. Her proud parents are Devon Masterson, patient coordinator at Esticia, and Thomas Masterson, civil engineer at Contech Engineering Solutions. Megan is pursuing a degree in Exercise Science, and as a PreMed student, plans attend medical school. Her academic honors include AP Scholars Award and Science Endorsement Diploma. Megan is also a member of Spanish National Honor Society, serving as Secretary (20142016); National English Honor Society (2014-1016); and National Honor Society (2015-2016). For three years, Megan held the role of Secretary for Students Against Melanoma Club for which she received special recognition and was a member of Key Club (2014-2016). Additionally, she also was involved for two years with IB Student Union and received the Panther of the Week award. Not surprisingly, professors describe Megan as academically-talented, incredibly hard-working, energetic, outgoing, mature, capable, focused, a leader among her peers, and enjoyable to have in class. Megan’s community and civic service is exemplary and involves close to 200 hours volunteering at the Loggerhead Marine Life Center, working with the camp and conducting beach cleanups. Furthermore, Megan devoted 500 hours during a three-year period as assistant coach to the Boys’ Volleyball Team. Likewise, Megan donated 50 hours to extra projects with Students Against Melanoma Club. In addition to excelling academically, Megan managed to balance her studies while competing in Varsity Volleyball for four years, acting as Team Captain her junior and senior years. She received the Most Valuable Player of the Year Award her senior year and was recognized in the Palm Beach Post as first and second-team AllConference, her Senior and Junior year respectively. Not one to sit idle, Megan worked part-time as a sales associate for Hollister her senior year and provided childcare during her freshman, sophomore and junior years. When not studying, working or on the volleyball court, Megan can be found playing beach volleyball, visiting local animal shelters, such as Furry Friends in Jupiter, and shadowing a plastic surgeon weekly to gain knowledge. • • • SEPTEMBER 2016 • DITCHMEN NUCA OF FLORIDA DISTINGUISHED RECIPIENT—HIGH SCHOOL 29
