"This incident supported one of the most important lessons I learned as a child, to treat others like you want to be treated."

I starred at his face. He looked familiar, but I couldn’t remember because of the situation. He immediately replied, “I come into the bank where you work.” I did remember him because of his style of dressing. The young man said with a smile, “I’ll help you, but the only reason I’m helping you is because you are the only person that speaks to me when I come in there.”

I wasn’t surprise because I always speak to others. That was nothing out of the ordinary for me. I smiled at him just before he ran quickly into his house. He came out in what seemed to be seconds, with a jimmy bar in his hand. Quickly, he put the bar between the door and glass, and opened my car door. Just like that! I gave him the biggest hug ever and thanked him.

He smiled and said, “You are more than welcome.” I got in and checked on the baby who was smiling. As he walked away, I realized that I did remember him. He was always dressed in a Gothic type style with black hair, all black clothes, black shoes, and black eye make-up. He

would always just nod his head after I spoke to him at my teller window. Nevertheless, I always felt that people have their own style, so it's not my place to judge, besides black was my favorite color.

The strangest thing is I worked at the same location for about four years and I never saw the young man again. Although, I'm sure he was not an angel in disguise, he was there at the very crucial moment of my life. He was my angel uncovered. This incident supported one of the most important lessons I learned as a child, to treat others like you want to be treated. Looking back over 20 years later, I can see that I have taught that

lesson well to my almost 21-year-old daughter. She is just as kind hearted and excepting of others as I. Kindness does go far. Although, I don’t show kindness to others to get it back, I’ve learned that a smile and a simple “hello” can definitely make a huge difference.
