JOY: The Strength

of a Marriage

As we progress into this new year, I reflect on my life and how I feel being alone at this time. Although I do not dwell on not having a mate, I sometimes find it hard to believe that I do not have one. Nevertheless, I still appreciate the institution of marriage and how it plays a vital role in our society. Every day, two people meet, fall in love, and make life plans together. This gives me hope, and I feel blessed that I can even experience this. When I think about the many people, I know who are married, I wonder how many couples truly understand how blessed they are to share their time, space, and lives with someone? I personally realize that there are ups and downs in a marriage, but one must come to realize that situations and circumstances should not be the clue for the stability of a marriage.

Although the divorce rate is going up, there are couples every day who are deciding to get married and share their lives with each other. There is a spiritual factor that we all must come to understand. There will always be situations that will make you feel

dissatisfied with your spouse from time to time and circumstances that will make you contemplate even leaving the union. It takes strength to endure and keep your commitment to someone, and that strength is JOY. Joy is "a state of being" which is not based on how you feel. It is based on a choice to endure and love despite the circumstances. Joy is one of the substances that keeps a marriage strong and last for years.

"Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another," (I John 4: 11, KJV).
