Oh No! Another Survey!

I don’t know about you, but doesn’t it seem as if there are too many surveys out there. No matter where you go or what you purchase seems to be followed shorty with a customer service satisfaction survey to be filled out or given orally over the phone. When you call some businesses for example the automated computer voice asks you at the end of your phone call if you would like to take a short survey. This happens all the time with cable TV companies, doctor offices, insurance companies, airlines, department stores, veterinarians and even political affiliated polls etc. The list goes on and on.

We live in the information age and everyone wants to get into the consumers head to find out how we feel about their company and product. It seems everyone out there wants validation of their company, but some companies ask too many questions. Some statistics show only 20% of the people who answer the surveys mailed to them, emailed, texted or given orally on a phone. Some companies out there want to know how they can improve their businesses, while some use it to promote their business to gain more notoriety for personal gain.

I travel a lot and have stayed in many motels and by the time I get back from my trip, my email box has a survey waiting for me. I remember talking to a motel manager

who told me that most people only survey when they have something bad to say. I told him that’s not true because their good surveys are what led me into booking their motel in the first place. That motel had 21 bad surveys, but they also had 94 good ones. This manager was so focused on the 21 bad ones that he overlooked the good ones.

Some managers in the motel industries don’t like bad reviews which is understandable. These reviews are just another name for a survey. They cannot erase these surveys on their end. So now they’re forced into promoting their businesses better, which will bring up their rating and bury the bad reviews father down on their list.
