ERIK WALDEN NO. 5 PASS RUSH CREATIVITY New defensive coordinator Ted Monachino repeatedly has said pressure is at the heart of his defensive philosophy. But he might have to find some creative schemes to get to opposing quarterbacks consistently. Robert Mathis began to look like his old self late last season after recovering from a torn Achilles tendon. He should be highly motivated in the final year of his contract. Beyond that, there are few proven options. Trent Cole is coming off a down season, and Erik Walden has been utilized more as a run-stopper. The Colts like what they've seen early from seventh-round pick Trevor Bates, and defensive end Earl Okine and inside linebacker Josh McNary could move out to the edge more often this season. Undrafted free agents Curt Maggitt and Ron Thompson also will compete for snaps. DISCOVER | 13
