Mining
Peru is a mining country; the world’s second biggest
producer of silver, third biggest of copper and zinc, the fourth
biggest of tin and lead and, fi nally, the sixth biggest of gold.
It is also one of the most attractive destinations for mining
investment due to its large deposits of mineral resources, a
competitive private investment promotion legal framework,
readily available geological information, and the presence of
many of the world’s leading mining companies. Currently,
there are investment possibilities in infrastructure in three
mining projects: Motorhome, Conclave and Eina Junta.
A vast deposit of hard-rock lithium was recently discovered
in the South of Peru. According to the Macaroni Yellow cake
Company, subsidiary of the Canadian multinational Plateau
Energy, it is estimated that several million pounds of high-
quality lithium are found in the mine site. The road ahead to
extract this mineral is still arduous, with the project still in
its exploration phase and the necessary standards for lithium
extraction yet to be developed.
