Initial Interactions between Peru and India
Before the formal establishment of diplomatic relations,
some remarkable events took place between India and Peru,
like the arrival of the Peruvian Navy frigate “BAP Amazonas”
to Calcutta on 6th February 1857, to make some repairs. The
“BAP Amazonas” was circumnavigating the world in an
epic journey that took 582 days and 41,000 nautical miles.
The frigate remained in Calcutta (Kolkata) until the 28th of
April, 1857.
Another noteworthy international event between Peru and
India happened on 12th May 1897, when the Government of
Peru established a Vice Consulate in Kolkata. At that time,
India was part of the British Empire. These ties were further
strengthened when both countries became members of the
League of Nations in January 1920.
Then on 14th September 1925, the Maharaja of Kapurtala,
head of one of the many kingdoms of India, paid a visit
to Peru. The dignitary arrived at the port of Callao on the
“Oroya” steamer and was received by the president of Peru,
Augusto B. Leguia, in Lima.
Later, on 26th June 1945, the friendly contacts between
India and Peru deepened in multilateral affairs as well, when
