MIDDLE EAST NOTEBOOK When the Syrian uprising began in 2011, the Saudi- Emirati provided vast fi nancial and weapon support to anti-Assad militants and sided with the Sunni force who promoted regime change as they saw this as an opportunity to deal with Iran and its ally in the region. Against this backdrop, Trump administration tightens sanction on Iran by suggesting that more concrete action could follow if Iran does not curb its ballistic missile program and continues support in regional proxy confl icts. iv While Trump administration was “undertaking a larger strategic review” against Iran, Israeli were trying to gain international attention towards one of the world's busiest shipping routes which is threatened by Houthi’s since 2015. Israel and Saudi-Emirati are aware that they cannot control Iran’s growing infl uence by launching a direct offensive military strike. Under Trump, Israel and the Arabs are in a better position to put diplomatic pressure on international communities by branding Iranian outpost in the region as a terror outfi t’s whose domination would have far-reaching consequences regionally as well as internationally. *The author is Researcher, West Asia, Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA).
