Little Sun
Little Sun is a project Olafur Eliasson
LITTLE SUN 2012
developed with engineer Frederik
Ottesen. It is a social business and
global project addressing the need for
light in a sustainable way that benefits
communities without electricity, creates
local jobs, and generates local profits. The
project’s mission is to bring light to ones
who have no direct access to electric
power via sustainable green energy, to
provide free light to the 1.2 billion people
living “off-grid”, by using the work of art
to raise awareness. It is distributed in nine
African countries and sold in Europe, the
United States and Japan.
It is an attractive, high-quality solarpowered LED lamp, which uses the
rechargeable battery and has no sideeffects. Unlike kerosene fueled lamps,
which are currently being used with
harmful side-effects, these lamps are safe
and can be used by everyone.
Here are some of the great benefits of the
Little Sun
• Efficiency: 5 hours of natural light equals
5 hours of ‘Little Sun’ light.
• Longevity: Little Sun has a lifespan
of 3 years before it needs a battery
replacement.
• Flexibility: Hang it on your wall or place it
on a table, carry it as a hand-held lantern,
wear it or attach to your bike.
• Durability: Little Sun is dust-proof, UV
and heat-resistant.
• Economical: 90% savings over 3 years
compared to kerosene lamps.

Another fantastic project which brought Olafur Eliasson
world-wide recognition is The Weather Project.
It was an art installation in London’s Tate Modern. Eliasson
created a huge artificial Sun, mirrored ceiling and mist
machine. “In The Weather Project, Eliasson has sought to
bring a part of London into the building, and through the
experience and memory of the work, a part of it is taken
back out into the city by the viewer.“
