The very fact that such lighting can rarely look normal makes it ideal for creative use. We instinctively recognize things that are somehow »wrong« and this kind of manipulation of light can be
used to create specific moods, to display certain emotions and/or provoke the desired response in
viewers.
Here is an excellent example of an effective side light from two light sources: one to illuminate the face, the other for the background. If we omit the second light source, the shape of the neck of the boy would be completely lost in the shadows. Thus backlight outlines the silhouette of his neck and hair and
reveals their forms to us.
This is still a side light in respect to the axis of the camera, but turning the head of the model gives a completely different effect. (No, fangs and tongue will not be extended under this kind of
lighting - that’s another story.)

Two sharp side light source without auxiliary frontal lights provide a very interesting effect as it is shown in this case.
