DIGITAL UP MAGAZINE LIGHT
LIGHT FROM BELOW
If lighting from directly above the subject is unusual, then illuminating the subject from underneath
it is even more so. In nature, this type of light can be seen when someone is standing over a
campfire, or holding a torch in his hand. Light can also come from below, if reflected, for example,
from a water surface. This light will give an unusual appearance even to familiar things, as things that we’re used to being in the shadows are now in light, and vice versa (the shadows are unusual because they »fall« upwards instead of downwards).
Brightening the face from below creates a fearsome look and a feeling of anxiety. Even reflections in the eyes look weird because where they are. This angle of light will also emphasize the surface textures.
The very fact that such lighting can rarely look normal makes it ideal for creative use. We instinctively recognize things that are somehow »wrong« and this kind of manipulation of light can be
used to create specific moods, to display certain emotions and/or provoke the desired response in
viewers.
