SIDE LIGHT
Side lights are also very frequently used as a weaker, diffused, supportive lights to illuminate shadows. Side lighting is perfect for showing the texture and form and gives three-dimensional quality
to objects. The shadows are emphasized and the contrast is high. Side light can be used to throw
dramatic shadows on surrounding surfaces, such as walls and for creating an atmosphere in the
scene. In nature, it can be seen early in the morning and before sunset and it is very attractive,
and as such is very often used in photography and film.
A potential drawback of this illumination is that detail, and the whole subject, can be lost in the
shadows while it can emphasize surface imperfections such as bumps and dents or wrinkles of
human skin. In portrait photography such light is mainly used for men, more often than for women, because it can create a very rough look, especially if shadows are not softened using diffuser.
