( Diary , # 926- 928 ): “ On Shrove Tuesday , February 9 , 1937 , during the last two days of the carnival ,” Sr . Faustina experienced a great “ flood of chastisements and sins ” including “ a knowledge of the sins committed throughout the whole world during these days .” ( Diary , # 926 ). Even if she knew the depths of God ’ s mercy , she collapsed briefly from great terror .
Sr . Faustina was surprised that God allowed humanity to exist . But she also came to understand that God continues to uphold humanity through His chosen souls . Then , “ When the number of the chosen ones is complete , the world will cease to exist ” ( Diary , # 926 ).
Sr . Faustina then received Holy Communion as an act of reparation . She also offered up herself to the Lord as a “ victim ” soul to suffer greatly in reparation for man ’ s sin , “ to make up in part for the hearts that that do not love Him ,” 158 and for the return of souls to Him , united with Jesus on the Cross . She prayed , “ Jesus , I offer everything today for sinners . Let the blows of Your justice fall on me , and the sea of Your mercy engulf the poor sinners ” ( Diary , # 927 ). 159 Her prayers were accompanied by great sorrow for sin and an intense suffering of reparation . She was also left alone in her agony , burdened with experiencing the reality of God ’ s justice for the horrible sins committed throughout the world during that time . She became the object of God ’ s just anger . By evening , her sufferings reached a stage of interior bleakness . Groans and pains of affliction spontaneously came from the depths of her soul . She then locked her room door to begin a Holy Hour of Adoration of the Lord . At some point , Jesus suddenly appeared to her , held her close to His Heart and said , “ My daughter , do not weep , for I cannot bear your tears . I will grant you everything you ask for , but stop crying ” ( Diary , # 928 ). Her soul was then “ filled with great joy and ( her ) spirit was drowned in Him as its only Treasure .” The Lord heard her prayer and many souls returned to Him .
