(5.3) Special Torture of the Senses for Specific Souls Damned in Hell (Diary, # 741) Sr. Faustina also wrote in her Diary on a distinct but unspecified torture of the senses that were meant for specific souls, which corresponded to the senses that they used to sin. In Sr. Faustina’s words, “There are special tortures destined for particular souls. These are the torments of the senses. Each soul undergoes terrible and indescribable sufferings, related to the manner in which it has sinned. There are caverns and pits of torture where one form of agony differs from another…Let the sinner know that he will be tortured throughout all eternity, in those senses which he made use of to sin” (Diary, # 741). II A.6 On Suffering and Satan’s Wiles (6.1) Satan Attacks Sr. Faustina, the Messenger of the Divine Mercy Mission (Diary, # 713): On the evening of October 11, 1936, Sr. Faustina was writing on God’s immeasurable mercy and its great benefit for souls. Suddenly, Satan furiously stormed into her room, grabbed a screen, and proceeded to smash it. Sr. Faustina felt quite scared at first, until she made the sign of the Cross with her tiny Crucifix, and the evil spirit left quickly. But, the next day, although Sr. Faustina no longer saw the revolting figure, she sensed his strong presence and extreme anger. This time, however, he left the screen alone. Sr. Faustina ignored the whole situation and calmly continued writing silently. She felt assured that without God permitting it, the evil spirit could not harm her at all. But, she wondered, what was Satan trying to do? She observed that he started to attack her overtly and with intense venomous wrath and hatred hurled against her. But, he was never able to interrupt her serenity for even a moment, and this only enraged him even more. 36
