on Good Friday. These are nine days of prayer centered on specific groups that Jesus chose to be brought before Him each day. It specifically includes the Souls in Purgatory on the eighth day. This is the general format of the Novena, as Jesus instructed Sr. Faustina: I desire that during these nine days you bring souls to the fountain of My mercy, that they may draw therefrom strength and refreshment and whatever grace they need in the hardships of life, and especially at the hour of death (Diary, # 1209). On each day, you will bring to My Heart a different group of souls, and you will immerse them in this ocean of My mercy, and I will bring all these souls into the house of My Father. You will do this in this life and in the next. I will deny nothing to any soul whom you will bring to the fount of My mercy. On each day, you will beg My Father, on the strength of My bitter Passion, for graces for these souls (Diary, # 1209). Then on the Eighth Day of the Novena, the prayer intention says (Diary, # 1226): Today bring to Me the souls who are in the prison of Purgatory, and immerse them in the abyss of My mercy. Draw all the indulgences from the treasury of My Church and offer them on their behalf. Oh, if you only knew the torments they suffer, you would continually offer for them the alms of the spirit and pay off their debt to My justice. Jesus appeared briefly, such as how He looked during His Passion; a thoroughly wounded, suffering, and a disfigured human figure. But later on, He appeared only with His five big wounds (on His side, two hands, and two feet). As she stood before the “Thrice-Holy God,” Sr. Faustina realized that “even the smallest transgressions would have to be accounted for.” Jesus sternly asked her, “Who are you?” She answered, “I am Your servant, Lord.” Jesus told her determinedly, “You are guilty of one day of fire in Purgatory.” Sr. Faustina wanted then-and-there to plunge herself into the Purgatorial flames. But, Jesus blocked her and 33
