still “in a state of journeying towards ultimate perfection” and the beatific vision of God. 90 But despite their superior knowledge; of their own free will, the fallen angels committed the “sin of pride,” a moral rather than a physical evil, by disobeying and refusing “to serve God and His plan” for His creation; thus, they “became evil by their own doing” (Diary, # 1332). 91 These fallen angelic spirits are called demons or devils and their leader is Satan, Lucifer, or Beelzebul (Cf. Mt 12:24). 92xl But despite their sin or evil, and as enemies of God and man (Rev 12:9; 1 Jn 3:7-10; Eph 6:11-13), xli they are intact in their natural superior spiritual powers; even as they lost their chance of eternal happiness with God and their beatific vision of Him in Heaven (Diary, # 1332). 93 Despite their great “knowledge of God,” they “willfully turned away from God” (CCC, 1037), committed a grave sin, merited complete fall from grace, and were swiftly damned into Hell, with no further hope of salvation (Cf. Mt 25:41; Rev 20:10; Diary, # 1332). 94xlii On the other hand, the good angels, still with their initial grace, firmly chose God as their first act of love for Him; thus, they promptly merited beatific vision and eternal happiness in Heaven. 95 (2.2) God’s Lasting Design for Humanity: His Work of Divine Mercy (Diary, # 1743) In God’s infinite mercy, He created man from nothingness. He lovingly granted him a human nature and a soul. God did not need man to be happy Himself, but His immense goodness found this wanting. So He also allowed man to have a share in His eternal happiness and interior life. Sadly, he woefully failed the test.
