(3.1) The Image of the Divine Mercy 343
Sr. Faustina had a vision of Jesus on February 22, 1931, while in her room, at the convent
in Plock, Poland (Diary, # 47, xxii). In her Diary, she wrote that she saw Jesus standing, clothed
in a white floor-length robe, and near His feet, “the signature, Jesus I trust in You” (Diary, # 47,
xxii). His right hand was raised as in a blessing; while His left hand extended over His (pierced)
heart on His left chest area, from which proceeded two sizable rays, a “red” one on the right and
a “pale” one on the left (Diary, # 47, xxii). Since then, this vision set the “pattern” for the Divine
Mercy Image (Diary, # 47, xxii) as it is known today.
Jesus asked Sr. Faustina to have this “pattern” painted, and Fr. Sopocko, her Spiritual
Director and Confessor guided her in the fruition of this task (Diary, # 53, 47, xxii). On January
2, 1934, Sr. Faustina went to see the artist, Eugene Kazimiroski, to have him paint the Image
based on the “pattern,” as earlier noted; and the painting was finally completed in June 1934
(Diary, # 47, xxiii). Sr. Faustina lamented that the painting did not quite capture the beauty of
Jesus as she saw in the vision; but He consoled her and said, “Not in the beauty of the color, nor
the brush lies the greatness of this Image, but in My grace (Diary, # 313).
On the Divine Mercy Image and God’s mission of mercy, Jesus told Sr. Faustina:
