(Diary, # 938) God knows perfectly what a soul needs; and, in His mercy, He plans for the good of a soul. What could be better than, “what begins in God… will be godly?” This includes selecting a spiritual mentor for a soul. For in the end, a soul needs to follow God’s will, bare what is most concealed in the recesses of its heart, as well as enabled to “see” itself clearly before God. Sr. Faustina also urges to pray ardently that a soul be able “to discern” the will of God concerning his spiritual mentor; whether to choose one as the guide, or to keep him or not. Additionally, she warns on the risk of being a self-guided soul, especially when “aspiring for sanctity.” (Diary, # 939): Sr. Faustina wrote in her Diary on praying fervently to God for a Spiritual Director. He should be zealous and holy, as well as one who is seasoned, reasonable, or “prudent.” The spiritual guide must be receptive to divine enlightenment to be able to test a soul’s obedience and humility, to “deal wisely with the great mysteries…between a soul and God, and “to discern” God’s particular design for a soul. All these are crucial, since a soul defers primarily to a Spiritual Director’s viewpoint and directions, which are put before that of God Himself, to safeguard against illusions or the evil spirits’ digressions. Moreover, “the Director does not so much guide and point out the road along which the soul is to journey; but rather, he judges and confirms that the soul is following the right path and is being led by a good spirit” (Diary, # 939). (Diary, # 940): Sr. Faustina wrote in her Diary that she was tested much and suffered greatly in her search for a Spiritual Director-Confessor. She prayed intensely and did many novenas and mortifications to implore God’s favor for a saintly, regular Priest-Confessor and Spiritual Director, who would truly “understand” her case and help her soul. She lamented that, “There would be many more saintly souls if there were more experienced and saintly Confessors. 121
