Many of Chicago's greatest or most unusual restaurants are “no

almost two centuries of memorable service and adventurous
menus, this program revisits the institutions entrusted with the
city’s special occasions. Noted author Greg Borzo dishes out
course after course of fondly remembered fare, from Maxim's to
Charlie Trotter’s and Trader Vic’s to the Blackhawk.

The World Was Never the Same: Events That
Changed History
History is made and defined by landmark events. While many of
us are taught that anonymous social, political, and economic
forces are the driving factors behind events of the past,
acclaimed historian and award-winning Professor J. Rufus Fears
believes that it’s individuals, acting alone or together, who alter
the course of history.

The History of Chicago Baseball
Thursday, January 9, Noon Luncheon, $20
Presenter: Kevin Kaufmann
Baseball, because of its lengthy and rich history, offers us a
specific window by which we can view the past. Interested in
labor history? Baseball fought for a union for almost a century
and became, for a time anyway, the strongest labor union in
the United States. Immigration history? The game was started
by middle-class white men and with each successive wave of
immigration, heroes from various ethnicities emerged in the
game, reflecting the face of the nation. By blending the history
of Chicago, the history of the United States and the history of
baseball, a more nuanced picture of the past develops. Nothing
develops in a vacuum, including our amusements.
