Support Services
PACE has expanded its Dial-A-Ride program, which serves
older (60+) and disabled individuals living in Lake Bluff,
Knollwood and all of Lake Forest. Destinations include all parts
of Shields Township and Lake Forest, plus other selected
locations. The bus service operates Monday - Friday,
6:00 am - 6:00 pm, and costs $3 one way. Call Shields
Township Offices at 847-234-0802 for more information.
(Note: Registration must be completed one week prior to use
of the program.)
Confused by Medicare?
Many people newly-eligible for Medicare are confused about
sign-up rules and procedures, avoiding penalties, coverage
and selecting supplemental insurance and drug plans.
Information on these topics, as well as help addressing
problems with claims, is available as a free service from our
trained Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) volunteers,
sponsored by the Department of Aging. Call Janet at 847-810-
4678 for more information.
Local Taxi Options
Several local taxi companies offer a $3 off ride coupon for
seniors (65+) for transportation within the Lake Forest High
School District 115 only. You may request 16 coupons in a
30-day period. For more details and to register for this
program, please contact Janet Fryer at 847-810-4678.
No-Cost Counseling Available
If you are coping with multiple stressors or multiple losses,
professional counseling is available at no cost to you. Family
Service of Lake County offers counseling to those 60 or older
through a grant from the Northeastern Illinois Agency on Aging.
Issues might include loss of a loved one, loss of independence,
isolation, family relationships, anxiety and depression. Services
are offered in the Highland Park office or in your home. Please
call Family Services at 847-432-4981 x200 for more
information or to schedule an appointment.
Senior Resources
Commission
The purpose of the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Senior Resources
Commission (SRC) is to serve as an advisory board to the
Lake Forest Mayor and City Council and, as appropriate, to the
Lake Bluff President and Village Board regarding
recommendations for the coordination and planning for senior
residents in order to preserve their dignity, independence and
quality of life. By advocating for educational, social and cultural
opportunities and supportive services including transportation,
we help seniors maintain their independence. Especially as our
population becomes older, the SRC has an essential role in
determining the unmet needs of our senior residents and
recommending actions for necessary services/programs/
funding. As an integral part of its charge, the SRC provides
mission-based leadership and strategic guidance to the
Dickinson Hall Senior Center and supports funding for its
services/programs. As part of this process, the SRC reviews all
funding requests to the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Senior Citizens
Foundation and makes appropriate recommendations.
