MEET THE NEW SPEECH
AND DEBATE
HOUSE OF LORDS
PARLIAMENTARY
INTERNSHIPS
This year, the ESU’s Parliamentary
internship scheme gave three students
the opportunity to intern on Capitol
Hill. David Dalrymple-Pryde, Chris
Miller and Tom Peel all spent a few
weeks of the summer working in the
offices of Congressmen, undertaking
various day-to-day duties and being
exposed to the unique federal legislative
process. The interns were also given the
opportunity to attend a reception held
by the British Ambassador, at the British
Embassy and, at weekends, were able to
fully enjoy the experience of living in
Washington DC and all that America’s
capital city has to offer.

Following the success of last year’s
“Big Care Debate”, the ESU is proud to be
partnering up once again with the House
of Lords for their Chamber event. This
year’s theme is ‘The Great War: Listening
to the Past, Talking to the Future’ and will
take place on 29 November.
Our mentors have been working with
veterans from the Royal British Legion to
deliver interactive and fun Talking Days
to air cadets, sea cadets and army cadets
all over Scotland, Wales and England
from August through to October. The
16 Talking Days are reaching more
than 650 cadets and 50 veterans and
focused on intergenerational dialogue
while comprising expert debate training
from the ESU’s Mentors. Working with
the veterans has been a rewarding
experience for the cadets, and combined
with debating and public speaking
training, the Talking Days have been a
great way to introduce the UK’s cadets to
the work of the ESU.
Selection heats for the three services
(army, sea, air) took place in October.
Two cadets from the three services
were selected and partnered up with a
veteran. The ESU mentors coached the
three teams throughout October and
November as most of the cadets had
never debated before, leading up to
a very high level final in the House of
Lords on the 29 November.
