A nostalgic evening, presented by
Christopher Fifield, about the short life
of Kathleen Ferrier was illustrated by
various recordings. Christopher, who
worked with Kathleen, told the story of
her life, her artistry both on the piano
and as a singer, catching the eyes and
ears of the great musicians of her time.
The Sherlock Holmes Walking Tour
started in Bloomsbury and took in
relevant sites which appeared in Conan
Doyle’s books; characters such as Mrs
Hilton Cubitt from “The Dancing Men”
came alive.
Dame Mary Richardson and Steve
Roberts met members over afternoon
tea to discuss “The ESU – Today and
Tomorrow”. There was a healthy
discussion on priorities and the need
to publicise our activities and successes
more widely
Following our Annual General
Meeting, Sir Eldon Griffiths spoke on
“An American Perspective on British
Membership of the European Union” in
which he suggested it would be better for
the UK to stay in the European Union.
He also expressed his views on present
day America, given with a keen sense
of humour.
A mind-blowing tour of the Wallace
Collection, with its paintings, ceramics
and sculptures, left members determined
to arrange another visit in 2014.

Following members’ visit to ESU
Paris in May, a party from ESU France
and ESU Paris visited London in late
September. Coral Sebag-Montefiore
hosted a reception at her home to
welcome them to London.
The Book Club continues to thrive
with monthly meetings, discussing books
by a wide variety of authors.
