recently carried out in Bedfordshire
primary schools, which showed children
who are given more opportunities
to develop their verbal and oral
communication skills gain in selfconfidence, and do better in their
school subjects. Dr Wood stated that
the programme had been successful in
developing contacts with youngsters that
would develop their interest in the ESU
and lead to good participation in the
public speaking competition.
After a workshop session, the
conference came to an end and
delegates relaxed over dinner and an
optional visit to see Candide at the Royal
Shakespeare Company’s Swan Theatre.
