r. Rosemary Moodie, who has cared for
the most critically ill infants for two
decades as a neonatologist and who has
dedicated her life to alleviating poverty
and empowering girls and women, was presented with
the Council Award in March.
Dr. Moodie graduated from medical school at the
University of the West Indies in Jamaica. She did an
internship in the Caribbean, and then arrived at the
Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto to do a residency
in pediatrics in 1987. After completing a fellowship
in neonatology at Sick Kids, she went on staff at the
hospital in 1989. Sick Kids recognized her for 25 years
of outstanding service in 2012.
She has led multidisciplinary teams with evidencebased practice and is a passionate breastfeeding advocate
and researcher because she understands its impact on
future health, particularly for premature infants. In addition to her clinical duties, she is a participating pediatrician with the applied research group TARGetKids!
Dr. Moodie is the very embodiment of a life-long
learner, having amassed an impressive list of academic
achievements over the years, including a Master of
Business Administration from the Rotman School of
Management at the University of Toronto in 2007 and
a Master of Public Administration from Queen’s University in 2011. She completed these degrees part-time
while continuing to work full-time.
She has taken on community leadership roles, most
notably serving a three-year term from 2011 to 2014
as President and Board Chair of the YWCA Toronto
where she managed a $26 million annual budget. The
highlight of her tenure was the opening of the Elm
Centre in 2012, an $80 million, 300-unit affordable
housing project.
