Murray Regional Tourism Board
We’re delighted to have
worked with and contributed
to the Mighty Murray feature
in the December 2013 edition
of the Destinations for the
Discerning Traveller Magazine.
We were thrilled that Tara
Tyrrell, Managing Editor of
the magazine was able to
experience firsthand the
amazing experiences on offer
in the mighty Murray region
and her feature and blog truly
showcases why the Murray
is such a special place to
visit for both Australians and
international visitors alike.
The Murray has long been an Australian iconic destination,
home of the Mighty Murray River, the world’s third longest
navigable river alife source of Australia’s food bowl. Its human
occupation flows back 40,000 years, its rich and colourful
history from ancient indigenous peoples to bushrangers and
explorers, truly makes visiting the Murray a quintessential
Australian experience not to miss.
Come and create your own river story, eat from the food bowl
of Australia while you laze away an afternoon on the gracious
deck of a paddle steamer or your own houseboat. Slide into
high gear on a water-ski; kayak, cycle or even try your hand
at catching the elusive Murray Cod! Many enjoy testing their
skill on one or more of the 67 golf courses dotted along the
river too. Whether you’re a fast-paced adventurer or a laidback
meanderer, the Murray River region will leave you invigorated,
refreshed and coming back for more.
If it’s an escape to nature that you’re seeking, the Murray
offers you a diversity of natural environments to explore. From
the outback-edge oasis of Mildura plunge intothe sandy
hills of the Mungo National Park and visit some of Australia’s
most significant Aboriginal sites. Take an energising hike on
the many walking trails around the scenic Kings Billabong
or take in the views over the spectacular Pink Lakes in the
Murray Sunset National Park. Explore Australia’s largest inland
island Gunbower Island State Park, or paddle through the
lush wetlands of the heritage listed Barmah National Park and
Murray Valley National Park, immersing yourself within the
world’s largest stand of River Red Gums.
If a beautifully-crafted wine matched with quality produce is
more your style, go day tripping around the many wineries
and farm gates throughout the region. You’ll become better
acquainted with rich reds and signature Muscat’s, often
presented by fourth and fifth generation winemakers. The array
of fresh produce will tantalise your tastebuds and have you
buying more to take home! Alternatively, end your day on a
culinary high note at one of the area’s celebrated Murray River
front dinning locations to sample local produce presented to
perfection in line with slow food principles.
To experience this, visit the region and discover for yourselves
why we all love the Murray.
