Manhattan Beach Lodge on Big Trout Lake
As the face of America has changed over 80
years, the Lodge has changed with it. The buses
of the big bands made their stops in Manhattan
Beach through the 1930’s and 40’s.

As Central Minnesota became the vacation
escape for Hollywood’s elite, the Lodge was
an integral part of the scene with a guest list
including Bob Hope and his entourage.
During the 1950’s and 60’s Manhattan Beach
Lodge served primarily as a family resort. Most
of the cabins were sold during this period
and the property to the immediate north was
developed into condominiums.
“In 1995, the main lodge building was fully
renovated with ten guest rooms,” notes Glaser.
“In the spring of 1999, eight more rooms were
added to the Lodge to bring it to the 18 guest
rooms we have today.”

In the fall of 2008, Jason and Krista Brunkhorst
began their quest in the restaurant business and
formed Whitefish Catering. The tiki bar has been
active for ten years in the old bait and gas area.
Zorbaz on the Lake has 11 northern Minnesota
locations including Detroit Lakes, White Pine
Lake, Pelican Lake, Ottertail Lake, Cross Lake, Gull
Lake, Park Rapids, Lake Pokengama in Grand
Rapids, Big Sandy Lake in McGregor, Green Lake
near Willmar, Alexandria and Perham.

In 1969, Zorbaz on the Lake was conceived in an
old candy store by a disgruntled speech teacher
and his dental assistant wife. The name comes
from the popular 1960’s movie, Zorba the Greek,
starring Anthony Quinn. Zorba was fun loving,
free spirited, carefree and happy.
Exactly the atmosphere and attitude the teacher
and his bride wanted for their no shirt, no shoes,
no problems northern Minnesota lakes area
beach bar. They switched the theme to Mexican
food and pizza. It has a large beer selection,
pizza dough is homemade and salsa is fresh
daily.
