18 • March 2016 Bikers have many choices Up North to get an hour of exercise, a day or a full week. Minnesota has one of the best developed bike trail systems in the nation. Here are a few of them that make a loop through the lake country of central and northern Minnesota: Lake Wobegon Trail The Lake Wobegon Trail is a 46-mile long, 10-foot wide, bituminous surfaced path. The trail extends through central Minnesota from the city of St. Joseph to the city of Osakis. There are Trailheads in each of the cities - St. Joseph, Avon, Albany, Holdingford, Freeport, Melrose, Sauk Centre, West Union & Osakis. The trail also has an extension on the west side of Albany heading northeast to Holdingford and Highway 10 near Royalton Central Lakes Trail The Central Lakes Trail (CLT) runs 55 miles from Osakis northwest to Fergus Falls. The CLT continues from the end of the Lake Wobegon Trail on the outskirts of Osakis. From there, the trail runs through Nelson, Alexandria (within a block of the statue of “Big Ole,” the Viking, and the Kensington Runestone) on to Garfield, Stowe Lake Wildlife Area, Evansville, Melby, Ashby, Dalton, beautiful views of the Pomme de Terre River valley and ends in Fergus Falls.
