Delgany There are some steep courses in Ireland, and Delgany sits at the high table when it comes to cavorting hillside golf. High tees, high greens, woodland and trees make this a fun, fun parkland. It is old too, so the trees are big and colourful, and these give the holes their individuality. Surprisingly, there’s plenty of room to play so by all means go wild with your driver – it is too tempting not to – but staying on the many sloping fairways and finding your way around the gentle doglegs should be your number one concern, especially on the opening holes where position is key. The 12th is probably the course’s best known hole (Index 1) but the par threes are particularly strong with the steep descent to the 16th green promising the tee shot of the day. The club is renowned for its four Ryder Cup heroes (one of only two clubs in the world to boast such a feat) and a visit to the bar where the trophies and history are displayed is a must. www.delganygolfclub.com 53
