LMQ7: How will I check that students have
achieved the defined learning outcomes?
Assessment
LMQ7 is a focus upon identifying evidence that when collected, is to be used to ascertain whether
the learning outcomes (from LMQ2) have been achieved. It is called “assessment”.
LMQ7 is a direct correlate to that of LMQ2 and is used to ascertain the extent of student learning and by
association to confirm that LMQ5 strategies have been successful. This means the teacher must choose
assessment strategies so that they reveal the extent of achievement with respect to the defined learning
outcomes (LMQ2). We examine the answering of LMQ7 in greater detail in Chapters Five and Six.
The Steps to Follow
Step 1: Revise the learning outcomes for the classroom curriculum from LMQ2.
Step 2: Identify assessment tasks that best fit each defined learning outcome (either singularly or
collectively with others) and by association become conscious of the scope of knowledge to be
assessed.
*** See Diagram 4.1 and Chapter Eight for details about the ‘Five Steps’ for choosing a best fit assessment
strategy.
Step 3: Decide how you will ensure reliability, validity and fairness in assessment tasks.
