buildingeye online
In partnership with Planning, DBI launched an interactive mapping tool of permits and complaint data through
buildingeye. This online interactive tool enhances users’ ability to see permits, inspections and complaint data using
a geo-spatial system found in our online Permit and Complaint Tracking System.
With the click of a mouse, users can access the Department of Building Inspection’s more than one million records
that date back to the 1960s through buildingeye. Combined with San Francisco Planning’s data, this interactive
mapping tool provides users the opportunity to:
• View all building permit types
• View project description
• View complaints
• Check on current status of projects
• Filter project search by neighborhood, address, or zip code
Vacant Building Program
Vacant or abandoned properties are community eyesores, and also pose threats as public safety hazards and
shelters of criminal activity. These buildings often are deteriorated beyond repair, overgrown with vegetation, and act
as potential dumping grounds for debris and other hazardous materials.
Legislation passed under Ordinance 194-09 (Residential) and Ordinance 182-14 (Commercial) require property
owners responsible for these lots to register their buildings with DBI. The code calls for an annual registration
fee, maintenance and security requirements. These two ordinances were developed to prompt owners to improve
abandoned buildings, restore them to proper code, and have them returned to community use. Property owner
information is required to be posted visibly on a vacant building.
