Catching Up ....with Katelyn Cave Who: of 2015 Graduate Guyer High School Hometown: Denton Age: 18 W hat’s up? Last April, the Guyer High Theater Troupe joined 70 other high schools from across North Texas at the Dallas Summer Musicals High School Theatre Awards. Judges, most from the professional theatre industry, watched high school shows and gave rankings and critiques. Shows were nominated for things like best set design, choreography and direction. Individual performers are also ranked and selected, and nine actresses and actors were named finalists. Winners then prepared a medley, performing a song from the part they got the nomination for as well as an entirely different song from another musical to showoff their acting and singing range. 8 What happened? Katelyn was named Best Actress of the Dallas Summer Musical Theater Awards, for her role as “The Leading Player” in Guyer High’s Pippin. As part of this honor, she earned a trip to New York and the opportunity to perform on Broadway. She spent a week attending rehearsals and musical workshops with 52 other nominees from across the country. In her words.... How was the trip? We rehearsed every day to craft a stunning show to put up on Broadway. Just like back in Dallas we were grouped up and taught a medley to sing solo as the character we were nominated for. Once again we brought another solo song with us from any other show to show off our range of performance. The direction we received ranged from big time Broadway producers, actors that won a Tony (award), choreographers that teach across the world, and many other famous artists. We also got the chance to see An American in Paris, (first Broadway show I ever saw) at the Palace Theatre and eat at the famous Sardi’s restaurant
