Busy practices increasingly want their dental nurses to contribute additional skills and add value to their businesses .
The General Dental Council ’ s ( GDC ) Scope of Practice ( GDC , 2013 ) has allowed registered nurses to take on more duties , which helps them to further their career and to become a great asset within the dental practice . In order to carry out these extended duties , the GDC has stipulated that further training is needed . The Scope of Practice guidance document sets out the skills and abilities each registrant group should have and describes additional skills that a dental nurse can develop after registration to increase the scope of their practice .
In response to this , NEBDN is looking to the future and has ambitious goals . The Board has revamped its strategic planning to meet ever increasing needs and expectations , including seeking new ways to be more efficient and effective . It is working on developing training and strengthening the standards in dental nursing in the UK .
NEBDN Chief Executive , Phil Hughes said : “ NEBDN is a close knit team of people with a strong individual and collective common goal to be , first and foremost , the ‘ gold standard ’ for dental nursing in the UK and internationally .
We strive to be unquestionable leaders and standard setters for dental nurses with our quality assured examinations and qualifications . NEBDN is supported to achieve this by the Board ’ s nationwide network of educational providers and hundreds of dedicated , expert volunteers .

As the recently strengthened Board of Trustees of the NEBDN makes its impact , and the advantages of the office relocation start to be realised , it is clear that we won ’ t be resting on our laurels , but moving at pace into the future .”
NEBDN has a proud history and intends to celebrate its achievements , future plans and activities at a 75th anniversary event in 2018 . Currently examining more than 3,000 dental nurses each year and growing , NEBDN is highly aware of its important role in maintaining and evolving excellent qualifying standards . These are critical to good quality oral health provision , which in turn benefits the general health and wellbeing of oral healthcare consumers .
