  According to the 1948 Constitution, the Parliament was changed into the Great National Assembly, a formal body, totally subordinate to the communist power. The 1948, 1952 and 1965 Constitutions guaranteed a series of freedoms including speech, press, assemblies, meetings and demonstrations, but they were merely theoretical in practice.
