SOUTHERN ILLINOIS STONE - 1ST QUARTER
Cold and wet conditions greeted Southern Illinois Stone during the 1st quarter of 2016 . During this time , there was a brief shutdown of production , as we completed our winter maintenance projects . Upon completion , we began production to replenish our supply of products .
We also took this time to construct a new training facility in the SIS maintenance shop . The new facility will provide the crew with a climate-controlled room to gather for safety meetings , employee training , and safety luncheons . The facility provides a centralized location for storage of safety PPE , along with an employee notification center .
Southern Illinois Stone did not have any lost time accidents or safety incidents during the 1st quarter of 2016 . SIS went through a MSHA inspection during the quarter , in which the quarry received ‘ ZERO ’ citations . The team at SIS continues to hold safety a number one priority .
During this quarter , sales of material were good even though the weather was not . Materials were moved to our Mt . Vernon asphalt plant for their upcoming road projects . The City of Mt . Vernon will be taking bids on May 12th for the “ 27th Street Reconstruction .” We were also busy suppling material to projects like reconstruction of 42nd Street in Mt . Vernon . This project has taken 9000 tons of construction aggregates . We wish to thank all of our customers that contributed to the busy first quarter at SIS . We certainly value your business throughout the year .
SIS continues to strive for safety and the first quarter was no exception . As always , we are appreciative of our employees ’ efforts to create and maintain a safe working environment .
SIS took advantage of the first quarter to complete its annual MSHA refresher and Hazard Communication training . In addition , we did first-aid training and completed our hearing test , keeping with our hearing conservation plan . To meet the criteria for the IAAP safety award , the SIS team gathered the information and documents . We were pleased to accept the Rock Solid award for safety at the annual IAAP convention in Springfield , IL . SIS was also the recipient of the Community Relations award which was accepted by Jack
Hennessey . SIS is proud and honored to be recognized by this organization and our peers .
Awards !
The National Stone , Sand and Gravel Association held its convention in Nashville , TN during the quarter and was attended by Greg Edwards , Plant Manager of SIS , along with Aggregates Area Manager , Mike Martin . During the convention , Greg Edwards was able to meet with Dave Turin of the Discovery Channel ’ s program , “ Gold Rush ” and chat about the mining industry .
