SEMO UNIVERSITY CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT STUDENTS TOUR CAPE READY MIX
On April 13 , 2016 the Cape Girardeau Ready Mix Plant hosted Dr . John Dudley ’ s Construction Management class from Southeast Missouri State University . The students ’ tour included an overview of Ready Mix operations , including scheduling , quality control , batching and delivery .
The tour began with Randy Hobbs , Operations Manager , giving an overview of the Regional Complex operations and talked about the importance of safety in operations . John Salentine , Plant Manager , demonstrated the truck loading process , while a specialized batch mixture was loaded in the truck .
The students met with Shane Matlock , Quality Control Technician , and actually tested the concrete . They checked slump and air content of the loaded concrete before it went to the jobsite . Matlock discussed job specifications and how the specs helps Delta Concrete determine which mix would best fit the customer needs and budget . Matlock discussed water-cement ratios and how the ratios can affect the strength and durability of the concrete . They also reviewed the workability for placement and finishing . Salentine and Matlock shared some of the hazards , when proper quality standards were not followed by the subcontractor finishing crews . In the control room , Salentine discussed the order- delivery process from start to finish . The group

toured the stockpiles and saw firsthand the production process . Several students expressed interest in the Command Batching system and the way we can schedule , and track in real time . The order taking and entry process emphasized that the importance of recording correct information . It is Delta ’ s commitment that our customers receive the right product , in the right quantities , at the right time .
The visit ended with a lively question / answer session , facilitated by Dan Grier , Area Manager . Construction Management students were able to see Cape Ready Mix in action - an operating business that has a
