MY SUMMER AT DELTA: AN INTERN’S
EXPERIENCE AND PERCEPTION
BY: LINDSEY WEINHOLTZ
As a college student, it is vital to obtain
some kind of internship before graduating
college. An internship provides students
an opportunity to learn about how to apply
the knowledge they have gained in school
to real world practices. At Delta, there is
an internship opportunity for various types
of students. Each student works with
a professional mentor, gains workplace
experience, and becomes a part of the Delta
Family.
For my internship, I was provided with the
opportunity to work with Don Rosenbarger
(VP of Operations). While majoring in
Civil Engineering with a specialization in
Environmental Engineering, I was able to
learn more about how engineering applies to
an organization in a business aspect. Don
received his degree in Civil Engineering, and
is now the Vice President of the company –
and I wanted to understand how engineering
fit into the overall structure. Besides working
with data analysis for the company, I was
also able to see how my own knowledge
of engineering was advantageous to the
business. I saw more than just numbers – I
saw the representation of those numbers
in the collective collaboration and operation
of the aggregate plants, quarries, and
construction offices.
Each day at work was a new learning
experience in which more about Delta
Companies and heavy highway construction
was revealed. Every person in the office
may specialize in different areas, but
all must understand each other to be
successful. Communication is crucial for
any work place or business. Working at
Delta kept me constantly improving my
communication skills: from introducing
myself to every person in the company to
giving a presentation to the President of the
company. My university provides me with
the information and theory, but an internship
provided me with the tools on how to utilize
the information and put the theory into
practice.
Due to my internship at Delta, I have
become a lot more observant of the
highways and roadways that I travel on. This

past summer I was given the opportunity
to study abroad in San Jose, Costa Rica,
for one month. While living in Costa Rica,
I was completely immersed in the culture
and language. I would
