Williamsville Stone
Williamsville Stone Co. (WSC) has been busy providing stone products for numerous
projects in Poplar Bluff that include: new Harps grocery store, new Walmart Neighborhood
Market, Oak Grove Road expansion, and new Three River’s College site entrance, just to
mention a few. In addition, WSC has also been supplying asphalt stone products to Delta
Asphalt for the Highway 160 resurfacing project in Stoddard County.
Williamsville Stone crew installed a new
walkway to the pump float for safer access
to the pump. During extreme high or low water elevations the previous catwalk set-up could
cause potential for a trip hazard. Thank you to Williamsville Stone’s Chris Cate who took the
lead on this project to improve safety at the quarry.
In addition the crew also installed a new yard sign to improve traffic safety for customers,
vendors, and employees that travel through
the yard where tall stockpiles can cause a
visibility hazard.

FLY-IN for Safety – Clinton, Arkansas
In an effort to keep communication flowing and emphasize the continuing
focus on working safely throughout Delta Companies, Inc, Ric Neubert
(President), Jerry Neels (Safety Manager), Rick Moody (Regional
Manager), and Don Rosenbarger (Vice President of Operations), visited
the Delta Asphalt Complex in Clinton, Arkansas, in August. John Bennett
(Area Manager), Shane Kelley (Regional Safety Coordinator), Artie
Cousins (Asphalt & Quarry Manager), and Bruce Blair (Quarry Foreman)
were on hand, meeting with employees about the safety record and the
need to STOP, THINK, ACT.
Conversation ranged from storage of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
– to the use of gloves – to a review of incidents and near misses.
According to Artie Cousins, “We are all in this together. We care about
each other and we watch out for each other.”
Through hourly and daily instruction, continuous reminders, and targeted
enforcement from all employees, the safety culture will expand within our
operations.
From the president (Continued)
employees with one year or less tenure with Delta. This is not a surprise as most of our operational jobs are in dangerous environments.
2) The second area of concern involves personal protection equipment, particularly gloves. While gloves do not offer 100% protection for
hands, they do offer some protection and can reduce the severity of some risks. We are offering a better selection of quality gloves in
order for empl oyees to feel more comfortable wearing gloves while on the job.
3) The third area of concern is distracted driving; not only Delta drivers, but the motoring public. We have had several incidents this year
resulting in injury and property damage that were preventable. Sources of distracted driving seem to increase as technology provides
more opportunity to multi-task while behind the wheel. Please fight the temptations to dilute your attention with anything other than the
task of reaching your destination without incident.
August had no recordables and September is promising with no recordables to date. Please make the commitment to avoid risky situations
and behavior and keep an eye out for people that may be exposed to risk. Again, half the recordables involve people with one year or less
experience with Delta. Everyone can help change this statistic by paying attention to our people with limited experience and helping them adopt
good processes.
