DELTA CONCRETE MARKS ONE YEAR AT NEW SIKESTON PLANT
March, 2014 marks a full year of operations for Delta Concrete at the
new ready mix plant in Sikeston, Missouri. The new plant is located on
the same grounds as the old plant, but has an updated facility.
Manager, “And we are happy to report
that there have been no dust issues
with the new facility.”
The ground breaking began
in late 2012 with the intention
of creating a newer, more
efficient, and cleaner facility.
The plant is located in a highly
visible area, relatively close to
Sikeston Public School and
a more esthetically pleasing
appearance was desirable.
A clean and well-maintained plant is
part of Delta’s ongoing commitment
to being a socially responsible,
environmentally conscious member of
each local community.
“Being a good neighbor is what it’s all
about,” stated Gale Miller, Sales Representative, at the Open House
event last September.
“The Sikeston Public School’s maintenance department had previously Delta Concrete would like to express appreciation to the ENTIRE
voiced some concerns about whether or not dust from the new plant DELTA TEAM. It truly was a team effort to accomplish this project so
would cause any problems at the school,” said Dan Grier, Regional successfully.
KPMG AUDIT COMPLETED: SUCCESS DELTA!
A challenge was presented to Delta Companies for the 2013 annual
audit: a new external accounting firm, KPMG LLP was hired to conduct
the external audit. Being new to each other’s business practices,
KPMG and Delta had to quickly build a functional working relationship
and understanding of each other’s processes. Sometimes painful,
sometimes easy – the task was a proven success.
What is the purpose of an external audit? An external audit by an
independent firm lets entities that extend Delta Companies credit
(such as investors, banks, bonding companies, state DOT’s, etc.)
know that the company’s financial results are accurate and that the
company is credible in their business practices. A favorable external
audit is helpful to Delta’s ability to bid work, bond work, and to borrow
money. The audit assists in spotting real and potential problems from
errors, fraud, and weak internal controls. Fortunately, Delta is in a
solid and positive position.
Even though the audit is conducted in the last quarter of the year,
each employee should ensure that records and documentation of all
transactions are accurate. Strive for excellence!! Accuracy is important
in all of our reporting data – from foreman reports, trucking report, fuel
reports to cash forecast and equipment hours and everyone’s favorite
– PAYROLL.
It is a combined team effort, operations and administrative, to ensure
that Delta continues to excel in providing the best and most accurate
financial results.
Troy
Ward,
Corporate
Controller states: “The close
and audit tested Delta’s
abilities to hit extremely tight
deadlines and still accurately
reflect our financials.
A big
‘thank you’ goes out to each
and every employee for their
efforts in reporting. And to my
staff for the work you did in
accommodating the auditors.
Our employees are the reason
for Delta’s continued success.”
A team from KPMG’s Kansas City and St. Louis offices came down
throughout November, December, and January. Working by phone
and email as well, Delta and KPMG worked in conjunction until the
completion and issuance of Delta’s statements on January 27, 2014.
The results announced that Delta Companies is in compliance and
ready for the new season.
FROM THE PRESIDENT (CONTINUED)
Not every task calls for increased attention, but some do. We must
be prepared to ramp up our effort when the results of an opportunity
hinge on our investment of time and effort.
Delta made significant improvements in 2013 and we will build on
those improvements in 2014. Safety and ethics are values that provide
the foundation for our organization. We will continue to nurture our
safety culture and continue to educate our team about operating
ethically. Regardless of the organizational changes Delta must incur to
adapt to changing market conditions, our commitment to a safe work
environment and doing the right thing will never change.

As we look at 2014 and beyond, I am sure that the economy in general,
and the infrastructure industry in particular, will improve. I am not sure
when! Growth could be slow and steady. But more often in our industry,
the boom starts with the stroke of a pen. The 2009 Stimulus Bill and
Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 provided
authority and funding that fueled infrastructure improvement across the
United States and put many Americans to work. Our legi slators, both
state and federal, need to find a solution that not only maintains the
existing system, but provides investment dollars required to compete
in today’s world economy. You will be receiving information from this
office that will provide resources for you to contact your legislators. I
urge you to make your voice heard. Our jobs depend on it!
