Preserving The Legacy “It Is Finished” By: Soror Patricia Godboldt Preserving the Legacy has become a very personal and meaningful phrase for sorors of the Jacksonville Alumnae Chapter. Many gathered at the gravesite of our beloved Founder and former chapter member, Winona Cargile Alexander, for a sacred Unveiling Service on Saturday June 9, 2018 at 11:00 am. With special thanks to Evergreen Cemetery, her marker was transformed to a Georgia Grey (her birth state) with her picture and an inscription which reads, “One of the twenty-two Founders of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated”. The song “Sweet Sweet Spirit” was playing softly in the background as our National, Regional, and State Dignitaries arrived and were seated. James Alexander, Sr., her son, Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren and another family member were in attendance. Senator Audrey Gibson, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and representatives from five surrounding chapters were just a few of our special guests. In Omega-Omega attire with accents of pearls and violets, our sisterhood paid tribute and acknowledged her legacy in a manner that was long overdue. By the Grace of God, this worthy project had come to fruition and as the words “it is finished” came to mind, I imagine that a sobering, humbling, yet euphoric and exuberating feeling flowed through all of us as the service so beautifully unfolded. The release of the doves signified the beauty and peace we felt as we left heading to a reception where her portrait would be donated and would forever hang, in the historic Ritz Theatre and Museum. 8
