Coming up in October is Children in Nature month and we
invite you to participate in an outdoor activity with a child in
your life this fall. This movement was started several years
ago recognizing that getting kids outdoors and frequent
interaction with nature improves physical health, mental
awareness, and instills an awareness and love of nature that
later can transfer to environmentally responsible citizens.
We kick-off Children in Nature Month with our Harvest Moon
Festival October 7-8.
At Delaware Nature Society, we’ve witnessed this transformation
from awareness to action in the many students, volunteers,
and interns we’ve introduced to nature over our 53 year history.
We thank all of the families that participate in our camps and
programs, and we’re proud of the many ecofriends that we now
have all over the world enjoying and working to protect our
environment. See the article on Young Waterfowlers, where
youth learn about waterfowl, wetland habitats, and conservation
in a multi-session program.
It doesn’t stop with youth; adults participate in programs to
improve their knowledge or just for fun. And many adventures
await our adult members locally and even internationally with
our eco tours program. Many of our adult participants go on to
use their knowledge to improve our environment as volunteers
like Dan Barbato who helps to monitor local water quality
and Peter Flint who received our Lifetime Achievement Award.
Whatever you’re doing this fall, make time to #Take5Outside
for a better environment. Every action makes a difference.
A great way to start, and learn how we’re improving the water in
our Delaware River and Bay, is by attending RiverDays activities
at DEEC on Saturday, September 23 from Noon – 4 pm. Join us
to learn more about the Delaware River and watershed.
