KURT NAHAR Snap Fasteners Low Bridge Works on paper 11.5 x 9.5 On the Move View Master Works on paper 11.5 x 9.5 Yes We Cannot Roll of Horor Mixed media paper collage 12.5 x 12.5 2016 From the Collection of Rosie Gordon-Wallace Kurt Nahar explores the various angles of forced displacement of large groups of people, focusing primarily on the victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, the Maroons who fled their jungle villages after the war in the interior in Suriname in the 80’s, as well as the current refugee crises from the Middle East. He focuses especially on the aftermath and the often-tragic consequences for all communities involved. Initially, many of his artworks and installations are shocking, but that is exactly his intention. Nahar wants to confront the public with those subjects which they are so often inclined to ignore or avoid seeing. His intention as an artist is to contribute to raising the consciousness of the general public and to encourage discussions regarding forgotten but important subjects of historical events, war, displacement, and bigotry.
