Kurt Nahar explores the various angles of forced displacement of large
groups of people, focusing primarily on the victims of Hurricane Katrina
in New Orleans, the Maroons who fled their jungle villages after the war
in the interior in Suriname in the 80’s, as well as the current refugee
crises from the Middle East. He focuses especially on the aftermath and
the often-tragic consequences for all communities involved.
Initially, many of his artworks and installations are shocking, but that
is exactly his intention. Nahar wants to confront the public with those
subjects which they are so often inclined to ignore or avoid seeing. His
intention as an artist is to contribute to raising the consciousness of the
general public and to encourage discussions regarding forgotten but
important subjects of historical events, war, displacement, and bigotry.
