ANTON KANNEMEYER D is for Dancing Ministers From the Alphabet of Democracy Series Acrylic and Black Ink on Lithographic Print 22 x 24 2006 From the Collection of Petra Mason D is for Dancing Ministers is from the first prints that Kannemeyer did at The Artists’ Press where he focused on images from his Alphabet of Democracy series. The initial reference is to childhood primers and illustrated alphabets, where ‘letter-land’ gets political. The text on the prints reflects his obsession with hand typography and the style of the prints recalls his earlier silk-screens with the backgrounds of flat color. Anton Kannemeyer is a South African comic artist who makes images imbued with black humor, subversive thinking, and satire. Born in Cape Town, Kannemeyer is the co-founder of Bitterkomix in South Africa. Jack Shainman Gallery has represented Kannemeyer since 2008. www.jackshainman.com/artists/anton-kannemeyer
