Rosa Naday Garmendia is a Cuban-American, Miami-based
multidisciplinary artist exhibiting with Diaspora Vibe Gallery. Rituals
of Commemoration stems from the artist’s desire to address urgent
social and philosophical issues of the present day in order to inspire a
dialogue focused on issues of social justice. With this installation piece,
made of bricks stenciled with the names of those fallen from police
altercations, she proposes a new action to the time-honored rituals of
devotion and commemoration. She seeks to engage a diverse audience
by highlighting and creating a safe space for the viewer to explore,
wonder, be provoked, interpret, or find purpose and meaning in the
issues our nation faces.
