ecember is one of my
favorite months of
Duck season, especially
the opening of the second split.
The past few years, the season
opener has been great with
most birds being teal and a few
others of the early birds. The
reason I love the opening of the
second split even more is because of the birds it usually
brings. The second split is
mostly when we start seeing
more of those grey ducks (gadwall), wigeon, and even fullplumed pintail. Those of us
marsh hunters in the southeast
portion of the state are always
accustomed to seeing those
grey duck days, but I feel this
year, with the amount of pintail
we've seen in the southeast
early this season, it will only get
better. The days get colder, the
water lower, and those puddle
ducks even thicker.
