Marsh & Bayou’s Fishing Forecast Venice Inshore Capt. Ron Price Fish Intimidator ( 504)416-6731 www.fishintimidator.com Fishing in Venice in December can be very easy or at least, decent, depending on the river level. If the river is low and green, it will usually produce the best fishing of the entire year for trout, redfish, and flounder within a short distance from the marina. At the time I’m writing this, the river has already made a jump and gotten muddy. When the river makes a jump like this, it pushes all the saltwater fish back out of the river system. The fish then begin to migrate into the saltier marshes where the tides keep replacing water with salty Gulf water. If you check out a map, you’ll notice most of the outer pockets and bays will generally hold good fish, wind dependent. I always try to pick a lee shore area as the wind helps push the muddy river water away ”The speckled trout from the banks and pockwill also stack up in ets. On warmer days, you deep water ponds and can catch most fish under bayous and the ledges a popping cork using soft plastics or live shrimp. If of bays but tend not the conditions aren't very to bite very good until good, live shrimp is cera day or two after the tainly more favorable! On front and then it's the much colder days, the fish will need to be fished usually game on!” on the bottom with an extremely slow retrieve - almost like worm fishing for bass, but sometimes even slower. Cold fronts will tend to stack up the redfish in deeper ponds, canals, and bayous down on the bottom, and they usually will still eat pretty well despite harsh conditions. I like to use 3" Gulp shrimp, Mann’s HardNose Mullet, or just plain fresh shrimp on a 3/8 ounce jighead. The speckled trout will also stack up in deep water ponds and bayous and on the ledges of bays, but tend not to bite very well until a day or two after the front, and then it's usually “game on!” Look for bait activity and clean water. If it warms up enough where you're pulling clothes off, a popping cork generally works again. The main thing to do is play the wind and look at maps to decide what area is most sheltered from the prevailing wind. Use extreme caution when underway after a hard front, particularly on low tide. Routes you run the rest of the year can leave you high and dry. 17 We are Madisonville’s Fishing Headquarters!!!
