The fronts have arrived, and the water temperatures have cooled considerably. The cooling
water temperatures have the trout and reds feasting on anything and everything they can chase
down. The fall pattern is still in full effect.
Redfish
The redfish are still entrenched in the ponds in
our area. On pre-frontal days, when the water is
up, we’re working points and cuts where the tide is
moving. With so much tidal fluctuation right now,
the water doesn’t have a chance to get really clean
to be able to use artificial baits effectively. Fresh
shrimp has been the best bait when suspended
about a foot under a cork. When the winds switch
to the north and the tides fall, we’re fishing points
on bigger ditches and canals that drain the marsh.
Fresh shrimp is the ticket here as well.
Speckled Trout
Everywhere from the Pen to even Barataria
Bay has some trout right now. The big key is a
combination of submerged grass and clean water.
Find both of those, and you will find some fish.
Lately, the leeward sides of the bigger lakes and
bays have been holding the cleanest water. The
trout are being suckers for Ghost Minnows, 2ft
under a cork or tightlined on the bottom.
Down on the island, December is a good month
for chilling and fishing. In the winter months, weather
dictates when you can fish. Believe it or not, trout
are still hanging around the island. The rocks at
Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries are a good place to
start, and the points around Dutch Island are also
good. Trout are moving north, and the Leeville area
is also hot. The last of the shrimp will be pulled out
by the marsh by the strong frontal passages. If y
