Welcome to the June issue of Data Centre News . It ’ s difficult for me to write about anything other than the small matter of the UK ’ s EU referendum – sneaking up on us quietly – or perhaps not – on 23rd June . Like the Scottish independence vote two years ago , it ’ s getting tougher to call which way it will go . Most Scots I spoke to long before the referendum predicted the ‘ No ’ vote would win comfortably – in the end it was a fairly small margin . Much of the campaigning from both sides has been labelled as ‘ scaremongering ’, but however many people had their minds made up from the outset , there will be plenty in the ‘ undecided ’ category right up to the day , so the campaigning , despite becoming unbearably relentless for many , is crucial . There have been many viewpoints already on how the outcome could affect UK businesses ’ data , and these will no doubt continue long after the referendum . However , as we report in Industry News ( page 7 ), in the event of a possible ‘ Brexit ’, the new EU General Data Protection Regulation , due to be in force in May 2018 , is still likely to apply . When I write this column in a month ’ s time it will be from a

new , independent United Kingdom , or simply ‘ as you were ’. See you on the other side …
A bit like the EU referendum , it ’ s quite hard to avoid talk about Big Data and the Internet of Things ( IoT ), our special feature this month . There ’ s no vote here though – these are here to stay . The special feature begins on page 18 with Nigel Stevens of IO looking at the impact the IoT will have on the role and function of data centres and the cloud .
In the Meet Me Room ( page 14 ) this month Jessica Constantinidis reveals how her dismantling of a Commodore 64 set her on a path into the IT industry from an early age , and in Centre of Attention ( page 12 ) Kate Brimsted from Reed Smith LLP assesses the impact of the EU ’ s Safe Harbor ruling so far .
