Projects & Agreements The Furze-Warren Hard Federation Looks to the Cloud to Back up three School Sites Redstor has helped to update the Furze-Warren Hard Federation’s data back up process. The Furze-Warren Hard Federation is a governing body of two schools within the Romford area. Prior to turning to off site cloud back up, network manager Chidi Oke was using a managed service for the schools’ servers and was operating Backup Exec and physical tapes to store sensitive data. With increasing size of student data and pressure from governing bodies insisting schools securely back up data off site on a daily basis, The Furze- Warren Hard Federation needed to rethink its strategy to storing information. Backing up data across multiple sites proved a challenge in itself for the federation, as there was no centralised data centre and instead Chidi had to ensure he visited each site throughout the week to manually change back up tapes. Chidi wanted a solution that would remain reliable, reduce back up timeframes, and require significantly less time to manage. A few weeks later Chidi attended BETT (the British Educational Training and Technology Show) where he met with Redstor and received a demonstration of its Redstor Backup Service for Schools (RBUSS). The Furze-Warren Hard Federation is now utilising RBUSS to back up 2TB of student and staff data across its schools. A significant difference since rolling out the service has been the time taken to complete a back up which has significantly dropped from 8-12 hours using the previous solutions to less than an hour. The appointment follows a year-long procurement process during which Civica showed a clear understanding of the challenges and goals of the Data Futures programme. HESA managers were impressed by Civica’s expertise in software development and user experience. Civica will work with the Data Futures team at HESA to develop the technology underpinning the Data Futures programme. By undertaking ‘peak planning’, DFS has managed spikes in website traffic around Christmas, and has been able to grow the business through new digital services. Undertaking a process of digital transformation, DFS has introduced in store functionality on staff tablets allowing them to show customers the products they are interested in on the video walls and screens, really bringing the product to life. The business experiences two peak shopping periods throughout the year, one being the ‘Guaranteed by Christmas’ ordering period in September, and the other around the Boxing Day sales. Traffic to the website during these times spikes by 68 per cent compared to average levels during the rest of the year. During these periods, it is vital that the retailer’s IT infrastructure works effectively. According to research from Adobe, online shoppers are becoming more discerning and impatient, and will not stay loyal to an online retailer that doesn’t provide a seamless service. Employing a VMware managed virtualisation offering, Rackspace worked with DFS to carry out peak period planning to help ensure the retailer is prepared to deal with traffic surges and help ensure online channels work effectively for customers.
